Match result and series winner
The simplest and most widely offered market is the match winner — which team wins the game. In Test cricket this extends to an additional "Draw" outcome, making it a three-way market. Series-winner betting asks which side will win a multi-match series such as The Ashes (typically 5 Tests) before the first ball is bowled, with prices offered from the squad-announcement stage onwards.
Most UK bookmakers offer series-winner markets for England's major international series from the tour schedule announcement, often three to six months ahead of the series. The early markets carry higher overrounds; prices generally sharpen as squad selections are finalised and weather forecasts crystallise.
Innings and match totals
Run-total markets — how many runs will be scored in a specified innings or across the entire match — are among the most actively traded cricket bets. Bookmakers typically offer an over/under line set around the expected total, with each side paying roughly evens. Factors that experienced punters monitor include pitch condition, weather forecasts, and the historical scoring averages at the specific ground.
In limited-overs cricket, total-runs markets are offered per team per innings, as well as for specific over "segments" — the runs scored in overs 1–6 (the power-period), overs 10–15, or the final 5 overs. These segments are particularly popular in IPL and T20 Blast betting because they produce quick settlement.
Innings betting (match within a match)
Innings-specific markets allow punters to bet on outcomes within a single innings regardless of the match result. Common options include:
- Method of first wicket — will the first wicket fall to a caught, bowled, LBW, or run-out dismissal?
- Partnership runs — will a specified opening or middle-order partnership exceed a runs threshold?
- Innings batsman milestones — will a named batsman reach 50, 100, or any agreed landmark before dismissal?
- Extras in the innings — over/under on wides plus no-balls for the innings.
These bets settle when the innings closes, so they carry no uncertainty about match duration — useful in multi-day Tests where other markets may be suspended pending weather.
Top batsman and top bowler
Top-batsman markets ask which player will score the most runs in an innings or match. Top-bowler asks which player will take the most wickets. When two players are level at the close, most operators apply a dead-heat rule that returns a proportion of winnings calculated as 1/N of the stake (where N is the number of tied players), though some operators simply settle on the first player to reach the equal mark first.
StratfordReel's research shows significant variation between operators in both depth and pricing of player-specific markets. Betfred and Coral typically carry the deepest player-performance menus on county fixtures, where Sky Bet and William Hill concentrate primarily on international games.
Man of the match
Offered by most UK sportsbooks for major internationals and T20 competitions. Betfair Exchange is often the best source for sharp prices on this market given its peer-to-peer model, but the UKGC-licensed fixed-odds books also carry it for ICC events and the Ashes.
Tournament outrights
Outright markets on tournaments — who will win the IPL, the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, the County Championship, or The Hundred — are available from all five operators on our current ranking. Opening prices are typically available from the tournament draw or squad announcement. Betfred and Coral are noted for their breadth of outright options beyond the winner — including top-team in each conference, winning margin, and highest run scorer across a tournament.
Live-betting (live) cricket betting
Live-betting markets update continuously as a match progresses. UK bookmakers suspend markets between overs to recompile their books; the speed of resuspension and the granularity of live-betting options vary significantly. Over-by-over run totals are typically available throughout a T20 innings; in Test cricket the scope narrows to session totals and session match-winner markets once the ball is live.
Live streaming through your bookmaker account materially improves the live-betting experience. Coral TV and William Hill TV carry select international fixtures, while Sky Bet's integration with Sky Sports is particularly strong for domestic coverage.
What to look for in a cricket bookmaker
When assessing a sportsbook for cricket wagering, the StratfordReel rubric weighs the following in descending priority:
- Market count on domestic county and T20 Blast fixtures, not only internationals
- Speed of live-betting market resuspension between overs
- Availability of live streaming for cricket fixtures
- Outright market depth for Ashes, IPL, and ICC events
- Pricing competitiveness on Test match-winner lines
These five dimensions separate a cricket-first bookmaker from a general sportsbook that happens to list cricket alongside 30 other sports. Our home page ranking scores each operator in detail.
Responsible cricket wagering
Cricket's long format — multiple sessions, rain delays, and multi-day Tests — can create natural pauses for reflection that faster sports do not. If you find yourself chasing losses across an extended Test, use those natural breaks to step away from the screen. All UKGC-licensed operators are required to offer deposit limits and session time limits on request. The National Gambling Helpline is available 24/7 at 0808 802 0133.
